In 1999, the famous Japanese Automobile manufacturer Honda celebrated its 50th anniversary. Therefore, the company has decided to introduce a new line of roadsters, named "S2000". The name "S2000" comes from the vehicle’s engine displacement of 2 liters. S2000 was also inspired by the S500, S600, and S800 roadsters of the 1960s. Honda S2000 was manufactured in two generations.
The first generation (1999–2003) is also known as "AP1". It came with a 2-door convertible body style, 94.5 in wheelbase and a front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The S2000 model was also available with 2.0L I-4 F20C engine and 6-speed manual transmission. Plus, the first Honda S2000 was provided with independent double wishbone suspension, electrically assisted steering and integrated roll hoops.
The second generation (2004–2009) was called "AP2". It came with 17 in (43 cm) wheels and Bridgestone RE-050 tires. Oversteer was decreased, thanks to the retuned suspension. This generation also featured some exterior modifications, such as new front and rear bumpers, revised headlight assemblies, new LED tail-lights, and oval-tipped exhausts. In North America, Honda S2000 was equipped with a larger and more powerful F22C1 engine.
In 2009, Honda S2000 was discontinued. However, the S2000 model has won several awards through its 10 years history, including U.S. News & World Report’s "Best Affordable Sports Car" in 2008 and 2009.
