In 1999, the Japanese automaker Mazda introduced a new series of minivans called the Premacy. Since its creation, the Mazda Premacy has been manufactured in three generations. In the second generation, the Premacy was called "Mazda5" outside of Japan.
The second generation of Premacy and the first generation of Mazda 5 (2005–2010) featured an FF layout and a compact MPV body style. This generation had a 108-inch wheelbase and was based on the Mazda BK platform. The Mazda 5 came with four engine options: a 1.8L MZR I4, 2.0L MZR I4, 2.3L MZR I4, and 2.0L MZ-CD Diesel I4 engine. Four transmission types were available as well – a 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, and 6-speed manual transmission. In North America, the Mazda 5 offers space for six passengers as it utilizes three seat rows. On the other markets, the Mazda 5 provides room for 7 passengers.
Mazda launched the third generation of the Premacy and second generation of the Mazda 5 in 2010. It uses the Mazda CW platform and features a slightly increased wheelbase. This generation came with two new engine types – a 2.0L SKYACTIV-G (PE-VPS) I4 and 2.5L MZR I4 engine. Mazda also offers three transmission types: 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic, and 6-speed automatic transmission.
